Producers and marketers of Judión de La Granja have had, since 4 June 2026, a first-class legal protection tool: registration in the European register of geographical indications. Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1271 formalizes this protection, which is based on the framework of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143.

The direct consequence is twofold: those who meet the requirements gain access to a seal of differentiation recognized throughout Europe; those who use the name without meeting them are exposed to legal action in any EU member state.

What does this regulation establish?

The regulation formally registers the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) "Judión de La Granja" in the official register of geographical indications of the European Union. This activates a legal protection system with three immediate effects:

  • Name reservation: the use of "Judión de La Granja" is reserved exclusively to operators in the delimited geographical area that comply with the product specification established.
  • Prohibition of misuse: imitations, evocations or any use of the name that could cause confusion are prohibited, even if expressions such as "type", "style" or "imitation" are added.
  • Protection throughout the EU: protection is automatic in all 27 member states from the date of entry into force, without the need for additional registrations in each country.

The product specification determines which producers can benefit from the PGI. Only those who comply with it and pass the corresponding certification controls will be able to use the PGI seal on their products and market them under this denomination in the European single market.

Economic and operational impact

Registration in the European register has concrete economic and operational consequences for the different actors in the value chain:

ActorImpact
Certified producerAccess to the PGI seal, greater differentiation and commercial positioning throughout the EU. Possibility of accessing premium markets and international distribution under protected denomination.
Non-certified producerProhibition of using the name "Judión de La Granja" even if the product is from the area, if it does not comply with the product specification and pass certification.
Marketer / distributorObligation to verify that products labeled with the PGI have current certification. Legal risk if marketing non-certified product under this denomination.
Competitor outside the areaAbsolute prohibition of using the name or any evocation of it throughout the EU, regardless of the country of origin of the product.

From a business opportunity perspective, the PGI is a commercial asset: products with protected denomination systematically obtain higher prices in the market and greater access to specialized distribution channels, both in Spain and in the rest of Europe.

Who does it affect?

  • Agricultural producers in the delimited geographical area for Judión de La Granja who wish to market under this denomination.
  • Packaging and processing companies that work with this product and use the name in their labeling or commercial communication.
  • Distributors and wholesalers that market the product in Spain or other EU countries.
  • Exporters that operate in European markets and use the name "Judión de La Granja" in their sales materials.
  • Competitors from other geographical areas that currently use the name or an evocation of it without being in the delimited area.
  • E-commerce platforms and marketplaces that sell products under this denomination, with responsibility for the accuracy of labeling.

Practical example

A producer from La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia) who grows and packages beans meets the initial geographical requirements. To be able to label their product as "Judión de La Granja PGI" and sell it in Germany, France or any other member state, they must:

  1. Verify that their production process fully complies with the PGI product specification.
  2. Submit to the certification process before the designated control body.
  3. Once certified, use the PGI seal on the labeling, which allows them to access European supermarket shelves that require protected denomination as a quality guarantee.

Conversely, a producer from another province that markets large white beans under the name "Judión style La Granja" incurs misuse of the PGI, prohibited throughout the EU from 4 June 2026, and may be subject to legal action both by the European Commission and by the certified producers themselves.

What should companies do now?

  1. Review current labeling: if your company uses the name "Judión de La Granja" on any product, packaging, website or commercial material, immediately verify whether you have PGI certification or are at risk of misuse.
  2. Consult the product specification: producers in the delimited geographical area must review the PGI product specification to know if their production process meets certification requirements.
  3. Start the certification process: if you meet the geographical and production requirements, contact the designated control body to start certification and be able to legally use the PGI seal.
  4. Update supplier contracts: distributors and marketers must require their suppliers to provide documentation proving PGI certification before marketing the product under this denomination.
  5. Adapt commercial strategy: if you are already certified or in the process, take advantage of European protection to strengthen positioning in export markets where PGI is a recognized differentiator.
