IGP Valderredible Potato: European Protection and Opportunities for Cantabrian Producers

Potato producers in the Valderredible region of Cantabria have had a new business asset since 4 June 2026: legal protection of the name "Valderredible Potato" throughout the European Union. The Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1275, published on 11 June 2026, registers this product in the official register of geographical indications of the EU in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2024/1143.

This is not merely an honorific recognition. It has immediate commercial and legal consequences: who can use the name, how the product must be labeled, and what happens if a competitor outside the area uses it without authorization.

What does this regulation establish?

The Regulation registers the denomination "Valderredible Potato" as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) in the register of geographical indications of the European Union. This activates a set of specific rights and obligations:

• Legal protection of the name throughout the EU: no producer outside the delimited geographical area can commercially use the name "Valderredible Potato", nor denominations that could cause confusion with it.
• Use of the PGI mark on labeling and marketing: producers and marketers in the Valderredible region adhering to the specification sheet will be able to incorporate the EU PGI logo on their packaging, commercial materials and communications.
• Legal pursuit of unauthorized use: any misuse of the protected name can be reported and pursued legally in any EU Member State.
• Access to export markets with differential quality recognition: the PGI facilitates marketing in European and international markets where the territorial quality seal has perceived value for consumers.

The legal basis for this registration is Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 of the European Parliament and of the Council, which regulates the system of geographical indications for agricultural products in the EU.

Economic and operational impact

Obtaining PGI status generates two types of impact for sector operators:

Economic opportunities:

• Access to premium pricing compared to conventional potato without denomination, by being able to differentiate the product with the PGI seal at the point of sale.
• Greater recognition in specialized distribution channels (gourmet stores, quality hospitality, exports) where PGIs have growing demand.
• Opening of export opportunities to other Member States with a product with territorial identity officially recognized by the EU.

Operational obligations:

• Only producers adhering to the specification sheet of the PGI can use the name and seal. Those not adhering cannot market their product under this denomination even if they produce in the area.
• Labeling must comply with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 for the use of the PGI logo.
• Marketers and distributors operating with this product must verify that their suppliers are authorized to use the denomination, to avoid liability for misuse.

Who does it affect?

• Agricultural producers in Valderredible (Cantabria): those who grow potato in the delimited geographical area and wish to benefit from the PGI must adhere to the specification sheet.
• Marketers and distributors of potato in the region: must verify the authorization of their suppliers and adapt labeling if they are going to use the protected denomination.
• Potato producers outside Valderredible: are expressly prohibited from using the name "Valderredible Potato" or similar denominations that could cause confusion, throughout the EU.
• European importers and distributors: must ensure that products they market under this name come from authorized operators.

Practical example

A farmer in Valderredible who until now sold his potato as a conventional bulk product can, following PGI registration, adhere to the specification sheet and begin marketing his production under the denomination "Valderredible Potato" with the EU PGI logo on the packaging.

This allows him to differentiate himself on the shelf against potato without denomination, negotiate with specialized distributors, and access export markets in other EU countries where the PGI seal is recognized and valued by consumers. At the same time, if a producer from another province uses the name "Valderredible Potato" on their labeling without being authorized, the regulatory council or any legitimate operator can initiate legal action in any EU Member State to stop that use.

What should companies do now?

1. Producers in Valderredible: contact the PGI regulatory council to learn about the specification sheet requirements and formalize membership if they wish to use the protected denomination.
2. Marketers and distributors: review current contracts and labeling to ensure that the denomination "Valderredible Potato" is only used when the product comes from an authorized operator.
3. Operators outside the area: remove or modify any labeling, commercial material or communication that uses the name "Valderredible Potato" or similar denominations, as their use is illegal throughout the EU from 4 June 2026.
4. Exporters: take advantage of PGI registration to open new distribution channels in European markets where territorial quality recognition has an impact on price and demand.
